Your Guide to Experiencing a Hoag Classic Weekend in Newport Beach

February 21, 2023

Ready for some springtime fun? Newport Beach is the ideal destination for a weekend getaway, especially if you’re in town for the Hoag Classic, one of the most exciting golf tournaments of the year. This highly-anticipated event will take place March 15-19 at the Newport Beach Country Club, welcoming some of the sport’s biggest names. Not a golf fan? Don’t fret—with miles of stunning shoreline, world-class restaurants and an abundance of outdoor activities, Newport Beach has something for everyone. We’ve pieced together the perfect itinerary to help you make the most of your Hoag Classic weekend.

Thursday, March 16

Let your vacation begin by checking into one of Newport Beach’s luxury hotels! The Hyatt Regency Newport Beach is a great option, located on the beautiful Back Bay just minutes from the Newport Beach Country Club. If being in the heart of it all is a priority, the newly refreshed VEA Newport Beach serves as a “social sanctuary” for all things dining, shopping and entertainment. Once you’ve checked in to your retreat of choice and freshened up, head over to Bluewater Grill on the harbor for a salty breeze and a tasty seafood dinner.

Friday, March 17

Get an early start and head to the Newport Beach Country Club for day one of the Hoag Classic! Catch the morning tee times (10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and watch the pros work their magic on the course. This tournament attracts some of the biggest names in golf, so be sure to bring your camera to capture all the action.

After the morning rounds, take a short drive down to Balboa Island. This quaint island is known for its charming boutiques, galleries, cafes and family-owned restaurants. Spend the afternoon strolling around and checking out the unique shops on Marine Avenue. Don’t forget to try a famous Balboa Bar from Sugar ‘n Spice, a tasty chocolate-dipped ice cream treat!

As the sun starts to set, head back to your hotel and freshen up for a night out. Head to dinner at Billy’s at the Beach, a lively Hawaiian-inspired restaurant with live music and tropical drinks. Try one of their world-famous mai tais as you snack on coconut shrimp, ahi tacos and cho cho skewers and take in views of the bay at sunset.

Saturday, March 18

Kickstart day two with a coffee and a quick bite from Wild Strawberry Cafe, located just steps from Fashion Island and minutes from Newport Beach Country Club. Once you’ve had your caffeine fix, head over to the course to catch round two from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. In the afternoon, attendees have the option to stay for the Military Honoree Recognition and Military Charity Presentation.

To wrap up day two, enjoy some sea time with a sunset cruise on Newport Harbor. Book a private charter with Newport Beach Sailing Charters and enjoy a glass of champagne as you take in the stunning sunset views. After your cruise around the bay, cozy up at The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar for an upscale meal featuring a menu of comforting classics.

Sunday, March 19

Gear up for the final round of the Hoag Classic! Sunday’s tee times begin at 9:30 a.m., so we suggest grabbing a quick breakfast in the lobby of your hotel, then heading in to catch the last round of play.

After a champion has been crowned, round out your trip to Newport Beach with a little shopping and dining at Fashion Island. This leisurely lifestyle destination sits just minutes from Newport Beach Country Club and offers the best of the best when it comes to shopping, dining and entertainment. Grab a late lunch at the all-new JOEY Newport Beach, then relax by catching a movie at THE LOT before heading back to your hotel for the evening, signaling the end of an epic Hoag Classic weekend.
