Couple’s Retreat

February 3, 2015

Back in 18th-century England, during a time of courtly love, admirers and couples expressed their affections with such gifts as flowers, confections, and greeting cards known as valentines. These traditions, which continue today, are often accompanied by more luxurious offerings — romantic dinners, couple’s spa retreats, and extravagant presents, to name a few. Look to Newport Beach’s hotels and resorts for the former, which host special menus and spa treatments for two this holiday, or even throughout the entire month.

The Resort at Pelican Hill
Food lovers can choose from a delicious array of dining options throughout Valentine’s Day weekend. On Feb. 13–15, Andrea offers Il Menu dell’ Amore, a four-course Italian meal with a “his and hers” menu. ($130 per person; $190 with wine pairings) At Pelican Grill, Chef Luke will prepare a three-course holiday menu for two ($120 per person; $160 with wine pairings) Dine pool- and Pacific Ocean-side at Coliseum Pool & Grill, where Chef Micah will romance your palate with a three-course Mediterranean meal. ($105 per person; $130 with wine pairings) Guests of the hotel on this weekend can enjoy the exclusive Piccolo Valentine’s Menu; Chef Jack’s globally inspired small plates will feature lobster, caviar, and lamb. Plus, indulge in a romantic dessert decorated with rose petals while also imbibing in a variety of wine pairings, beer, and specialty cocktails.

On Feb. 14, Pelican Hill’s popular Dinner of the Senses will stimulate each of the five senses — sight, touch, taste, scent, and sound. Created by Chef Micah, the seven-course menu for two will be served in a private poolside cabana. Each course is designed to be eaten by hand, further enhancing romance and desire. Customized music, flowers, and décor are available upon request. ($180 per person, $230 with wine pairings)

After you’ve slept off the prior evening’s Champagne and cocktail effects, relax and rejuvenate with a couple’s spa day. Throughout the entire month, the resort will offer the Ready for Romance Spa Suite Experience: Embrace romance with an aromatherapy oil blending experience for two followed by a couple’s Duet Massage featuring Aroma Intentions Massages with your freshly blended Ready for Romance oil. Celebrate your love together in the private Spa Suite with sparkling Prosecco, chocolate truffles, and spa cuisine lunch entrees for two. ($510 Monday – Thursday; $590 Friday – Sunday)
