Cannery Village
Located off Via Lido street as you first enter Balboa Peninsula, historic Cannery Village blends the
charm of Newport Beach's past -- brick sidewalks and a long-gone commercial fishing industry --
with its contemporary status as a venue for artists and musicians. Anglers love it for the
sportfishing while hungry boaters can dock and dine—tossing a line to a dock valet and
disembarking for a meal at several waterfront eateries. After lunch, walk off the calories by
strolling the area's eight square blocks and admiring the art on display that gives Cannery Village
its nickname of Montmartre by the Sea.
Take in a matinee at the charming Regency Lido Theatre located directly
across the street. Originally opened in 1938, the theatre was the premier
venue for Bette Davis' first film, "Jezebel." Today, it's been completely
renovated back to its 1930s condition and continues its Hollywood
connection by being one of the premier venues during the annual
Newport Beach Film Festival each April.
The Lido features independent films, and has become a landmark for the
independent and foreign genre. It's also considered the surf film capital
of Southern California, with its close proximity to the ocean and
continually runs a schedule of classic and new surf films. Grab a premovie
burger and a shake at Woody's Diner, an old-fashioned eatery
that welcomes regulars and visitors alike with great diner fare, and is
open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
