The Best Newport Beaches for a Bonfire on the Sand

January 18, 2024

Though fairly mild in terms of weather, the winter months in Newport Beach still usher in some chilly temps. So embrace the sweater weather this January and get cozy with us on the sand! Newport Beach is home to more than 10 miles of coastline, which includes several beaches perfect for a winter bonfire. Simply snag a fire pit, bring the bonfire essentials (s’mores anyone?!) and build your own cozy campfire. Here are three beaches in Newport Beach we love with fire pits.

Corona del Mar State Beach

The charming neighborhood of Corona del Mar lies at the south end of Newport and is home to its very own State Beach! Framed by a rock jetty and rugged bluffs, this stretch of sand spans a half-mile and is not only great for swimming and surfing but also has its own smattering of fire pits. Gather with your friends or family and roast hot dogs or s’mores as the waves roll in and the winter sun sets.

Balboa Peninsula Beach

A popular beach among locals and visitors, Balboa Peninsula Beach is a long stretch of sandy shoreline both to the north and south of the Balboa Pier. Take a stroll out on the pier and watch as the surfers catch waves during golden hour, then bundle up and snag a fire pit on the sand. This beach also has a paved bike path, picnic tables, public restrooms and plenty of nearby restaurants if a take-out meal is in the cards.

Newport Dunes

Perched on the beautiful shores of the Back Bay, Newport Dunes is a camper’s paradise with 24 cabins/cottages and more than 382 oversized RV sites. Each site features full hook-ups, RV parking and picnic tables—the perfect recipe for an outdoorsy retreat! Along the shoreline, just a short walk from the RV sites, visitors will find eight wood-burning fire rings. Get cozy with your crew (bring blankets and chairs as it gets chilly in the wintertime!) and enjoy a peaceful beach bonfire under the stars.
